Damn. I wasn’t paying attention. I didn’t know they were actually using these things in the real world. Such a bad idea.

The only way self-driving cars will work is if everybody uses one. I just don’t see how you can ever mix autonomous and piloted vehicles safely.

So this is going to be a huge story for years; far larger than the first remotely-piloted aircraft crashes, and far larger than the Tesla autopilot crash.

Agreed. This is big. How this happened and how this gets handled are going to set serious precedents in the industry.

Everyone’s going to learn how little we know about machine learning.

I hope every aspect of this incident gets the proper amount of attention, and that the technology doesn’t get all the media focus. I’m particularly curious about the human elements (both the safety operator and the cyclist), as well as the legal implications.

What a surprise. Couldn’t have possibly predicted that one.

That would be like a personalized form of mass transit, which could be done in a hypothetical society willing to cede operational control to a central authority. Never happen in our reality.

The biggest challenge for mass transit away from the old, compact cities is that everything is so spread out. It’s too hard to have enough infrastructure to serve more than a specific fraction of populace in a specific demographic. Our cities are built around the freedom that cars bring.

I listen to Sam Harris podcast and he’s had a few on AI and it really is terrifying how little we know/don’t know and the ethical ambivalence of many in the industry.
